The first prayer that God heard us pray was, “Lord have mercy on me a sinner and forgive me, this hour, for I am a needy creature.” We came under His drawing convicting power because no man ever comes to God without being drawn to believe. Then after our initial sins were forgiven and blotted out we found ourselves praying even the more; for ourselves, things and others. We are now going to prayer-school to learn how to communicate with our Heavenly Father. We must learn to pray for the grace of sanctification, for grace to hold us steady. We hunger for a fresh supply of daily assurance in faith, deliverance in times of temptations, help in our daily duty, and when trials come it’s not wrong to cry out for relief. We need God and He is disappointed when we don’t call to Him and trust Him in all our matters.

God is the only place to find deliverance if you have anything at all, it came down from God. And you’ll not get anything of eternal value, but from God! Holy manna, food from Heaven fills our very souls, water from the rock of ages, Jesus Christ, quenches our thirsting hearts-­”Come and drink ye all of it...”

We are people full of wants, “Ask and ye shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you.” The wants and needs are great, but the supply is greater from His bountiful storehouse. Your prayers are many, but His mercies are countless. He is hearing, He is strengthening you, and He is helping you as you ask; ”We have not because we ask not.” (James 1:5)

“Mercy”

Doubting, trembling, yet I call,

Dishonoring, sinning, on the mercy seat I fall; Blessings and benefits come from above, With gratitude I acknowledge that God is love.

Most people know something about Jesus, many know Him historically; but how many know Him to the fullest? We say we want to be like Him, but we cannot yet be exactly like Him, because we would have to be born of a virgin; suffer, bleed and die on a cross and then be raised from the dead by our own power, and all of the other things Christ did and will do. No, we can’t be like Him literally in that sense; but we can know Him, and live in the power of His resurrection. Think about it, we will rise again after we die and while we are yet living, we can live in the light of a redeemed life.  

And then we are called upon to know Him in the fellowship of His sufferings. It is one thing to live a life of mountain top experiences, in the glory of being a teacher or officer in the church, a deacon for instance or maybe you desire to be a Preacher or leader in the church. Our heart’s sing to be called upon to minister to others, to be in a position where others look to you for guidance and wisdom.  But then when the responsibility of the office takes us away from the safety of the church building, soul winning, for instance; or building a Bible study class from scratch; Maybe mending a roof or painting the building; We then realize that there is not much glamour or glory in it. And it definitely proves out who is serious and who is not. 

If God has chosen you to do a work, and He has for all of us a work to do. If you climb the mountain, He is there; if your work is in the valley, He is there; Even when you are in the furnace. He is there. He speaks, “fear not, I am with thee.” He chose us, and you can believe that he is with us. (Isaiah 43:5).

“Comfort”

Comfort yourself, believer tried,

For on the Cross, for you He died.

The word brings peace,

like a soft spring shower,

Dampening the flames

of the tempestuous hour.

God’s Love through Us - Paul Chappell

God’s  Love through Us

Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. 1 John 4:11-13

     God’s love for us does not depend on our love for Him; he loves us unconditionally. Our love for others should reflect the unconditional love of God. Christ does not give us a list of requirements someone must meet in order for us to love them. He does not command us to love only those who love us. He tells us to love one another. This means everyone.

     Romans 5:5 says,”And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Of our own power, we would not be able to consistently show God’s love. Yet through the empowering of His Holy Spirit, we can even show love to those who mistreat us.

    God wants to let His love flow through our lives. While some may not read of God’s love in His Word or see His love on Calvary, they may see it through us his believers.

     The famous British preacher G. Campbell Morgan was once at lunch with his wife and his five sons who were also preachers. A friend asked them, “Who is the greatest preacher?” In unison the six men said, “Our mother” Mrs. Morgan’s life affected others more than any sermon her husband and sons had preached.

    Because we are Christians, people will watch how we live and what we let affect our lives. How would someone judge Christianity based on your life? Are you letting Christ’s love flow through you? Or will someone never see the love of Christ because of your life? Ask Christ to give you the strength to love those around you, and let His love flow through you today.

HOW TO HAVE VICTORY OVER DISCOURAGEMENT AND DEPRESSION!
(IT’S SIMPLE BUT NOT EASY!)

Our deovotion for you today – was inspired and the direct result of our devotions this morning after reading from a devotion by Dr. Tom Wallace – we hope it will be a help and a blessing to you!  God Bless!

1Cor. 15:57 “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

          Though the Bible teaches us how to be overcomers, there is still much Doubt, Discouragement, Depression, and Defeat among Christians.  These things cause us to do strange things. 

1.  We will think wrong thoughts:  a) Like John the Baptist in prison, doubting if Jesus is really the Messiah, or should they look for another!  b) Then Mary and Martha sadly told Jesus had he been there their brother would not have died.

2.  We will do wrong things:  a) Moses, who smote the rock in the wilderness, rather than speak to it like God commanded.

3.  We will say wrong things: a) Like Job, (Job 3:3) “Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.”  Resenting the day he was born.

4.  We pray wrong prayers:  Elijah prayed for God to take his life.

5.  People see wrong things: Like the ten spies sent into Canaan, who saw giants and themselves as small as grasshoppers.

6.  Others go to wrong places:  a) Like Jonah, fleeing away from God and his responsibility.  b)  And Elijah under a Juniper tree.

          Now hear the words of the Lord – (2 Cor. 2:14) “Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.”

          Remember Christ is the answer to DISCOURAGEMENT AND DEPRESSION!  In Him there is victory for every need. 

We love and appreciate all of our families, friends, supporters.  May God richly bless you.  Keeping our focus on him will help to diminish the very realness of discouragement and depression.

WHAT DOES YOUR LOVE SAY?

1 John 5:3   For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

When I started courting my wife in Bible College, she went to our pastor and asked him what questions she should ask me to make sure I was a good man.  He instructed her to ask me if I tithed.  He said, “If he says he loves the Lord and does not give to the Lord, then likewise he will tell you he loves you and not give to you.”  This is very sound wisdom and we have seen many a spouse say they love the other, but their actions state the opposite.

Just like in our text, if we say we love the Lord and we don’t obey, give, and serve Him, then something is amiss.  Love is more action than it is feeling; so how is our love manifested in our lives?  What do our actions say about our real love for the Lord?  1 John 4:20 states, “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?”  There needs to be a consistency between what we say and what we do.

So as I look at my life today, is what I say illustrated by my actions?  If not then I need to confess my lack of consistency.  Then, I need to make this a part of my daily prayer life; analyzing and asking God to speak and empower my love be genuine.

Matthew 6:24, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

“Fill Me” ~ Dr. Tom Milam

Ephesians 5:18 “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;”

As sacred oil, to execute my office and privilege as a believer and grace to sustain a holy presence.  As purifying water, that cleanses me from the habitual practice of sin and sanctifies me with power to live righteously for the Lords good pleasure. (Rev. 4:11) “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

Fill me as the light, when first I saw my condition in my dark estate, and now reveal again the Lord Jesus to me, in me, and through me. He, who guides me in the way of righteousness, enlighten me by your pure celestial rays; we are no more darkness but light in the Lord.

Fill me as fire, burn out and melt away the impurities of blemish stains and dregs of sins that have pitted our vessel and set our consecrated nature to a full blaze.  He, the sacrificial flame by which we are given ability to offer our whole souls, bodies and spirit as living sacrifices unto God.

Fill me as heavenly dew, removing my barrenness and fertilizes my life and those that yield in gratitude and humility.  O’ that He would drop from above us that precious dew of discernment and cultivate in us that spectacular reverence of Himself; holy character.  Such sweet morning dew would be a savour of commencement for the new day.

Fill me as the dove, with wings of peaceful love brooding over His church and the souls of the true believers, and fill me as the Comforter, who dispels the cares and doubts which mars and scars the peace of His beloved bride.  He, who descended upon His Son in Jordans River that day, and bore witness to their sonship by working in those that watched a filial spirit by which they cry Abaa, Father.

Fill me as the wind, He that brings the breath of life to men; blowing where He may, performing His quickening music by which the spiritual creation is animated and sustained.  May we receive and feel His breath gently blowing upon our hearts as He manifests His holy character and instills His will in us. 

Fill me to the brim,

Fill me ought but Him.

Fill me today,

     In every way;

     Spot and blemish

     cannot stay.

Fill me, send me,

Fill me, lend me;

     Send me o’re and o’re again;

Fill me up Lord,

Burn me bright Lord,

E’re I fall, in reproach, from Him.

“Dying Is Nothing” ~ Tom Milam

(Getting To It Is Quite Rough)---II Corinthians 5:8; Hebrews 2:14

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.     II Corinthians 5:8  

Child of God, do you fear dying? Let me share with you a simple, but true testimony of one that has gotten their promotion from exile to going home. Though my first wife is with Jesus, she is still speaking through some of my sermons. A few weeks before she graduated to Heaven, she and I were talking about what she was going to wear at her funeral, who was going to sing and the Preacher that she wanted to take care of the service.

A nurse was busy taking care of the many bags, bottles and various other containers of medicines, and other necessary things. She stopped suddenly, what she was doing and said with a very perplexed look on her face, “how can you sit there and talk of death so calmly and make detailed plans for your funeral.?” “Doesn’t it bother you to talk of dying? You should be talking of living while undergoing chemotherpy, new blood and platelets almost daily.”  But Betty, very calmly, and with the greatest assurance of faith that I have ever witnessed, said, “There’s nothing to dying, I’m a Christian, I’ve been born again; but getting to it has been quite rough.”

We are all very close to Home, only a breath separates us from it. Life is hard, and is filled with many disappointments. Getting to death, our final enemy will no doubt have many difficulties for us along this journey, but dying is not death to the believer, it is finally living.  All of the storms of life will be over, and we may struggle with our last breath here, but our next breath will be in Glory, where there is nothing but peace and happiness, forever and ever.

Note:  We hear every day of friends and family who are and have faced death ... even as late as the last few weeks a sister has gone home to be with the Lord and a Preacher friend who saw his wife leave this life and now walking the streets of Heaven, and our dear friend who is going through leukemia and the list can go on and on.  It is the hope of every Christian ~ Heaven.  If you or your loved ones are facing a departure of this world to the next, we pray that you are saved and can say as Betty did, “There’s nothing to dying, I’m a Christian, I’ve been born again; . . . "  And HER testimony lives on!

“Our Home Is Just Beyond”

Just beyond the veil of tears, Just beyond the sadness of years, Just beyond the sorrows of grieving; Lies our hopes of glad receiving. Just beyond the broken dreams Lives that are filled with things and schemes, Just beyond lies deaths’ dark domain, getting to it has left scars and pain, All of those that have left before us--cheer us on­-”It’s Heaven you’ll gain! He died and arose, we tell it with fondness, we're not afraid, while looking for home.

“Bring him unto me.” ~ Spurgeon August 17 Morning

We served this week in a Revival Meeting at Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Bomont WV and were truly blessed.  Isn't it amazing how your intent is to go and be a blessing to a people who struggle every day to serve the Lord in a little church who's greatest normal Sunday attendence runs anywhere from 8 to 13 people; and then you come away realizing what a blessing they were to you!  That was this week!  Pastor Nick Bird and His precious wife, Juanita, and all the folks there at this little church could not have done more for this Preacher and wife, than these did.  The fellowship and special touches made our stay unique.  The ladies honored Linda with a sweet gift basket and made her feel uniquely special..... but through it all we were faced again with the fact that many of the trials and troubles this little band of people face are the same everywhere!  Their deepest desire is to see their children and grandchildren serve the Lord, and with gladness.  To surrender their lives to His Sweet Will ~ and be blessed beyond measure. . . but folks, we cannot make them. 

Then, this morning as I was reading, Spurgeons' devotion spoke to my heart! I do hope it will be a help and blessing to you!!!!

“Bring him unto me.”

Mark 9:19 ~ "He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me."

Despairingly the poor disappointed father turned away from the disciples to their Master. His son was in the worst possible condition, and all means had failed, but the miserable child was soon delivered from the evil one when the parent in faith obeyed the Lord Jesus’ word, “Bring him unto me.”

Children are a precious gift from God, but much anxiety comes with them. They may be a great joy or a great bitterness to their parents; they may be filled with the Spirit of God, or possessed with the spirit of evil. In all cases, the Word of God gives us one receipt for the curing of all their ills, “Bring him unto me.”

O for more agonizing prayer on their behalf while they are yet babes! Sin is there, let our prayers begin to attack it. Our cries for our offspring should precede those cries which betoken their actual advent into a world of sin. In the days of their youth we shall see sad tokens of that dumb and deaf spirit which will neither pray aright, nor hear the voice of God in the soul, but Jesus still commands, “Bring them unto me.”

When they are grown up they may wallow in sin and foam with enmity against God; then when our hearts are breaking we should remember the great Physician’s words, “Bring them unto me.”

Never must we cease to pray until they cease to breathe. No case is hopeless while Jesus lives.  The Lord sometimes suffers his people to be driven into a corner that they may experimentally know how necessary he is to them. Ungodly children, when they show us our own powerlessness against the depravity of their hearts, drive us to flee to the strong for strength, and this is a great blessing to us. Whatever our morning’s need may be, let it like a strong current bear us to the ocean of divine love. Jesus can soon remove our sorrow, he delights to comfort us. Let us hasten to him while he waits to meet us.

“Are You Ready?” ~ Dr. Tom Milam

II Timothy 4:6-8

6For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Many people allow the cares and worries of the world to depress and discourage them. Therefore they will begin to think that they might get cheated and not get to enter heaven. But this is not so dear friend; you can cast your fears to the wind. You are a child of God; therefore you will gain your inheritance. You have been making installments up there since the day you got saved.

I’ll never forget what an old black man told me several years ago while visiting in a hospital. He was 86 years old and said he was ready to die, that he had been laying up things in heaven for many years and “just as soon as God gets my seat ready”, he said, “I’m going to go sit in it.” I asked him was he afraid? He said, “Oh no, God has a crown that won’t fit nobody but me.  And there’s one place for me to set, and not even the great Apostle Paul can sit in my chair.” He said, “There is a portion of heaven made just for me. It is assigned to me and I can’t lose it.”

Friends, you can be assured, heaven is ours already. Just as if we were already there. If you are a born again child of God, you have reserved for you a robe, a crown and a mansion. Jesus will take us to those places that He couldn’t tell us of while down here. We could not have contained it in our temporal state. If you believe in the Lord Jesus, have repented of your sin, been renewed in your heart, then you are God’s. There is a place, a crown and a “seat” ready for you when you enter into glory.

“Ready”

I am ready to go, Heaven awaits,

 My fighting is ending, I’m reaching

for the gates.

 Faith is turning to sight, my course is set,

His appearing I love, so a crown I’ll get.

How To Grow ~ Tom Milam

“How To Grow”

II Peter 3:10-18

Vs. 18 “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”

Faith shows us how to grow in grace, believing God’s promises is the key to an abounding Christian life. Let faith have the full right-of-way in your life. Abraham would never have found the land of God’s promise had he not stepped out on faith and let it have it’s perfect work. (Genesis 12:1-9). Let faith be constant; if not, you’ll never see an increase in your growth. Without faith, you’ll either go backward or stand still, either is a serious transgression.

Allow faith also to increase in simplicity. This means we trust and God does the complicated part, performance. If we step through the door of faith, God will be there to take us to the next things that He has waiting, and all to our good.

The book of James teaches us to ask and we shall have, ask not and we shall not have. Do you need to know how to love? Then ask God to show you how to reach out and be a lover of mens souls. Pour yourself out to God to know love in it’s intensity and practicality.

Seek also to grow in humility, you’ll never know God until you’ve learned this. We will grow nearer to God and have a closer fellowship with Jesus when the Holy Spirit has freedom to work through us. Knowing Jesus is Heaven on earth and not knowing Him is life filled with confusion and despair.

Learn to grow in grace by seeking to know the human side of Jesus, His finished work, His suffering, His death, His resurrection, how He interceded for us, and His coming again in glory.

 Learn to love Him more and you’ll grow in grace.

“Do You Know Him?”

                             To know about Jesus is a wonderful thing,

                             But to personally know Him, all Heaven He’ll bring.

                             Be acquainted with Jesus and of His love to know,

                             And in grace, knowledge and wisdom you’ll grow.

Are you burdened this morning? Come and leave it at the foot of the cross and go back singing, “Burdens are Lifted at Calvary.” Remember when you first came to Jesus and you really knew that you had been forgiven? You could have swung over hell on a grape vine with a water pistol, when you first realized you were not held captive by the chains of darkness. The sweetness of the Holy Spirit gently squeezed your heart and said, you are loved beyond your imagination.

       Have you ever taken the devil to the place where Jesus met you? Where you bowed before God in humility, where He unbound the fetters of sin, and put a new song in your mouth? Have you recently reminded the devil that Jesus took away the pain of sin? (Jeremiah 31:3 

If we can’t find something to thank God for, or something to sing about, some way to lift up praise to Him for what He has done for us, and continues to do for us; Then we are prime candidates for Revival. Complacency is a weight and sin that will beset you! Remember, the same God that saved us and put a song in our heart of redemption, is the same living God that gives us the same loving-kindness that He did in the beginning of our new life.

Leaving your first love, that honeymoon love, will make you cold and lifeless, indifferent toward others, your church and God. Reclaim the benefits of His constant loving kindness and sing again the Rapturous beauty of being forgiven.

“Death Could Not Hold Him!” ~ Tom Milam

“Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;”  Psalms 91:5

But this secular world may well be afraid for:

1.   They have an angry God above them;

2.   A guilty conscience within them;

3.   A yawning hell beneath them;

4.   But we that are saved, “And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him.”  (Isaiah 30:18)

          The bloody cross is a scandal to unregenerate man, (foolishness).  No wonder they said, “come down from the cross” – “you saved others, now save yourself.”  (Luke 23:35)

1.   An example of religion will not save, but exceptional reliance on the Word of Truth will.

2.   It is not the Brilliance of the Crystal Christ of Poetry; but the Brightness of the Calvary Christ of Scripture.

4.   The heart of the Gospel is not Jesus of Nazareth, a man; but Jesus slain and risen for our justification.  Therefore proving deaths impossible predicament and the logical conclusion of sin.   “21And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. 22Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:  23Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:  24Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.” (Acts 2:21-24) 

          Though my body is lost at sea, and my remains never be found; and if this frail frame is burned to nothing but a pile of ashes; and though my body becomes part and parcel of this earth ~ still, aint no grave going to hold this body down; Christ got UP, so I’ll get UP and you’ll get UP on; “Come up hither!”
